There Is e There Are: como usar sem errar
There is e there are são as formas de dizer "há" ou "existe" em inglês. A regra é simples: there is para singular, there are para plural.
A regra básica
- There is + singular: There is a problem with my order. (Há um problema com meu pedido.)
- There are + plural: There are two options for delivery.
Compare:
- There is a message for you. (Há uma mensagem para você.)
- There are three messages for you. (Há três mensagens para você.)
Quando a dúvida aparece
Séries e listas. Quando há vários itens, use there are: There are a pen, a notebook and a laptop on the desk soa errado para nativos — o natural é there are, porque a lista é plural. Se o primeiro item for singular e você quiser enfatizá-lo, alguns nativos aceitam there is, mas em texto formal prefira there are.
Contáveis vs. incontáveis. Substantivos incontáveis (money, water, time) levam there is: There is no time to lose. / There is a lot of money involved. Nunca there are money — grude isso.
Números. Com qualquer quantidade acima de um, there are: There are 30 students in the class.
Negativas e perguntas
| Forma | Afirmativa | Negativa | Pergunta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singular | There is a bakery nearby. | There isn't a bakery nearby. | Is there a bakery nearby? |
| Plural | There are ATMs outside. | There aren't any ATMs. | Are there any ATMs? |
Are there some any restaurants open?
A forma contraída e o futuro
No dia a dia, there's substitui there is na fala: There's a faster way to do this. Para futuro, use there will be: There will be a delay of 20 minutes. Para passado, there was/were, com a mesma regra de número: There was a line / There were two lines.
Em inglês: There is a problem.
- There is + plural: There is many reasons → There are many reasons.
- Confundir it is com there is: It is raining (está chovendo) vs. There is rain (existe chuva) — contextos diferentes.
